The Huntley High School softball team took 3rd place in the IHSA Class 4A State Championship, capping an historic effort to repeat as state champions in 2019.
The Red Raiders rode a 15-game win streak into its first of two games on June 17, against perennial powerhouse and eventual champion Marist High School. The Raiders were unable to score against Marist ace Abby Dunning, who is committed to play collegiately at Boston College, falling 1-0.
The Raiders then took on Minooka in the third-place game, taking a hard-fought 4-3 win behind a 18-strikeout performance by ace Brianna Bower.
As noted in the Northwest Herald, the team’s 35-7 final record matches that of their 2019 state title season.
In addition to her commanding performance on the mound, Bower also hit her 13th home run of the season.
The 3rd-place finish ranks among the top two-season streaks in Illinois high school history. No team has repeated back-to-back championships. (The 2020 season was not played due to COVID-19.)
