District 158 Summer Reading Program Information

The Huntley High School English Department is very excited to share information about the District 158 Summer Reading Program, a district-wide effort to encourage reading for enjoyment. Reading over the summer months is an important opportunity for students to stay engaged and to develop a life-long commitment to reading and learning.

The Huntley High School English Department requires all students to read one book over the summer; students should choose books they want to read. This year, in an effort to truly promote the love of reading, we are giving students and families some choice and flexibility. Each current/entering high school student will choose one (1) book from the 2016 Abraham Lincoln Award/Illinois’ High School Readers’ Choice Award List. Students’ current English teacher can offer reading recommendations to students which take into account their interests and reading levels per the Abe Lincoln list (2016).

These books are readily available for purchase in stores such as Target, Barnes and Noble, Costco, and Wal-Mart. Students may also purchase the book through an online warehouse or marketplace such as Amazon (and may even purchase the book as an electronic download if available). The Huntley Public Library and Algonquin Public Library will also reserve copies of these titles for your convenience.

Please note that the Summer Reading Program is different from required reading for Advanced Placement and Dual Credit courses and does not replace these explicit curricular expectations.

Students must complete their summer reading by Friday, August 26, 2016. After this date, teachers will incorporate activities that address required summer reading into their lessons. Students will have an assessment per their teacher based on the summer reading title.

We thank you for supporting this district-wide Summer Reading program. Have a great summer and happy reading!
