HMS Teacher Lauded for Life-Saving Action

Heineman Middle School Spanish teacher Mrs. Lynn Petryniec was lauded by the Board of Education and members of the community for her quick thinking and action to save the life of a student last month.

Petryniec was on lunch duty in the cafeteria when sixth-grade student Melanie Taranis went to her for help when her friend, Emma Farr, was having difficulty breathing.

Petryniec, who had recently received training from the school nurse on the Heimlich Maneuver and CPR, quickly sprang into action. After asking a few basic diagnostic questions, she determined Farr was choking and then successfully performed the Heimlich Maneuver.

“On the security footage, Mrs. P is seen attempting the Heimlich maneuver while Emma was sitting.  She then picked Emma up and made two distinct attempts of the Heimlich maneuver,” HMS Principal Jake Litchfield told the Board of Education. “On the second attempt, the Cheez-It came out, Emma was able to catch her breath, and she was escorted to the school nurse.  Emma was able to return to school the very next day!”

Thank you to Mrs. P for being prepared and ready to spring into action to help a student, and to Melanie for acting quickly to help her friend!
