Dr. Rocio del Castillo Discusses Culturally Responsive Teaching on Leading Radio Show

Dr. Rocio del Castillo, assistant superintendent for special services, was recently a guest on an episode of BAM! Radio with Larry Ferlazzo, taking part in a discussion on the importance and implementation of culturally responsive teaching with other national experts.

BAM! Radio is a leading media network for educators, built on the belief that the key to success in life for children and youth is nurturing a healthy mind in a healthy body.

Ferlazzo is an award-winning teacher at Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento, California, and writes a popular education blog and teacher advice column for Education Week Teacher.

“As teachers we must teach the entire class in a way that all the students can relate to and understand while using aspects of their cultures and their backgrounds. To engage students, we must adapt our teaching to the way in which our students learn, rather than expect students to adapt their learning to the way they are taught,” del Castillo told the host.

“It’s part of making sure that each student feel like they belong in the classroom community. And that’s a fundamental piece for the learning process.”
