Huntley Community School District 158 will host information nights for families of incoming kindergarteners for 2019-20 interested in the District’s Dual Language Program as follows:
- February 28: Parent Informational Meeting at Chesak, 6:00 p.m.
- March 20: Parent Informational Meeting at Mackeben, 6:00 p.m.
- May 8: Parent Informational Meeting at Leggee, 6:00 p.m.
The same information will be presented at all events, and families may attend any session regardless of which school their child will attend.
Huntley 158 began its Dual Language Program last year, establishing dual language classrooms at each of its kindergarten buildings. Additional classrooms will be added in coming years until reaching full implementation of a dual language structure through fifth grade.
The program uses an 80/20 model, meaning that at the outset 80% of the time in the kindergarten class will be devoted to instruction in Spanish, with 20% in English. Over time, the amount of time spent in the target language decreases yearly as English increases until there is a 50/50 balance of the languages by 5th grade.
Current enrollment in the program comprises approximately 50% native Spanish speakers and 50% non-native Spanish speakers.
Students who are identified as English Learners and who qualify for bilingual instruction in Spanish based on language screening will receive placement into the program. Students who do not qualify for bilingual instruction, including all native English speakers, will be entered into a lottery for remaining spots.
The District also currently has job openings for educators qualified to teach in a bilingual elementary environment.
