About 25 Huntley High School students are preparing to compete at the state finals of the Illinois State Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics on May 7.
The HHS Math Team is one of just 18 full-team state qualifiers in the 4AA division, and the only such qualifier from McHenry County.
The finals comprise a full day of competition with individual exams, team competitions and oral exams. In addition, the team will compete in relays, which are reserved only for full-state qualifying teams.
“This is the first year that we’ve qualified as a full team because we have big competition,” said Laura Jenkins, who coaches the team along with Brian Thornley. “Our division has, by far, the toughest competition: New Trier, IMSA, Walter Payton, Stevenson and Naperville North. These are the power houses at the ICTM Math Contest.”
Last year, the team finished 42nd in state competition, a finish Jenkins says was low due to not competing as a full-team qualifier.
“I’m really excited to see us climb up the ladder and join some of those prestigious schools.”
