General Expectations for Students in HHS Bands:

The following expectations for students in the ensembles reflect the objective of creating the most valuable academic, artistic and social experience possible for the students.

BE HERE ON TIME AND BE PREPARED TO REHEARSE.

  1. Students must be in the room at the bell (9:07) and in their assigned seats, ready to begin rehearsal, by 9:09.  Specific instructions will be posted on the board.
  2. Bring a pencil (Every rehearsal.  No pens).
  3. Have your folio with all assigned music (not just pieces listed on the board).

4.   Have your instrument in best working condition, with all appropriate accessories.

PRACTICE “CONSTRUCTIVE CONDUCT” IN REHEARSALS:

  1. Use best playing techniques at all times, including (but not limited to) posture, breath support, embouchure, hand/finger positioning, grip/stroke.
  2. Listen attentively to instructions (even those not directed specifically to you), and apply those instructions as you play to the best of your ability.
  3. Be attentive to the director while playing.  Follow visual as well as verbal instructions, and cut-off quickly when instructed.
  4. Be positive with yourself and your peers.  Respect the efforts of others, and encourage the progress of individuals and the group.
  5. Listen as you play; balance and blend.  Don’t just play the notes; play the PART.
  6. Act to create a positive and secure rehearsal environment.  Treat peers, instructors, and instruments/equipment with care and respect.

Discipline Procedures:

Students who fail to practice constructive conduct will receive a verbal warning and a deduction in their participation grade.  Should poor conduct continue, additional deductions will be made.  Persistent disruptive or disrespectful conduct will result in a parent phone call, and a teacher detention may also be assigned.  Repeated episodes of poor behavior will result in referral to administration.  In extreme cases, parents, administrators and Mr. McKay may consider whether a student should remain in the ensemble.

Abusive and insubordinate behavior will not be tolerated at any time, and will result in removal from the classroom and immediate administrative action.
