Academic Requirements and Grading:

Bands at HHS are considered academic courses.  Students receive credit toward graduation requirements, and grades contribute to students’ grade point averages.  Students will be graded based on performance of criteria in three components of band, which are explained below.

I. Musical Development (25%):

Students will earn credit for improvement in individual playing skills and techniques, improved musicianship, and demonstration of increased knowledge of the elements and characteristics of various jazz styles.  Evaluation will include:

            A. Improved skills and expression - assessed via instrument performance.

            B. Mastery of new concepts - assessed via written assignments and exams.

            C. Prepared exercises and repertoire - assessed via instrument performance.

II. Rehearsal Participation (50%):

Students will earn credit for meeting the General Expectations for Students in the areas of attendance, preparation, and conduct.  This will be assessed daily and continuously through rehearsals.

Students may receive extra credit for exemplary musical contributions to the ensemble, acts of leadership within rehearsals, and assistance with organizational tasks and rehearsal preparation.

III. Performance Participation (25%):

Students earn credit for participation in ensemble performances, with equal credit given to each performance.  Students will earn full credit by displaying effort to perform the music - as instructed - to the best of their ability, and for following all prescribed guidelines for performances regarding attire and etiquette.

Absences will only be excused based on the guidelines regarding absence from school (illness, family emergency, etc.).  All other absences will result in a zero unless approved by Mr. McKay at least 2 weeks in advance (enough time to prepare other students to cover all parts).  Required performances will be announced a minimum of a month in advance.  When conflicts occur with other school functions, the students should give Mr. McKay 2 weeks notice, so efforts may be made among the staff to arrange a compromise.
